Morgan Brinkman Joins Gastroenterology Associates

Morgan joined Gastroenterology Associates of Catawba Valley in September 2025. Most recently, she was a physician assistant with a gastroenterology practice in the Boone area.

Morgan has also served as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), medical office assistant, and certified nursing assistant working in western North Carolina.

Morgan earned her undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University with a concentration in Exercise Science. She received her Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Wingate University.

Morgan is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and licensed in the state of North Carolina.

Morgan is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology.

She is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Morgan is on the medical staff of Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.

Dr. Gregory Diamonti Joins Gastroenterology Associates

Gregory Diamonti, MD, FACG, joined Gastroenterology Associates of Catawba Valley on August 4, 2025.

Dr. Diamonti is a board-certified gastroenterologist with 23 years of experience and a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology.

Most recently, Dr. Diamonti practiced in the Boone area. Prior to that, he was a physician with Gastroenterology Associates in Hickory for 18 years.

Catawba Valley Health System (CVHS) has announced the addition of Gastroenterology Associates, PA, of Hickory to its medical group. The name of the practice has been updated to Gastroenterology Associates of Catawba Valley Health System effective June 1. All services, staff and team of physicians will remain the same, and the location will still be 415 North Center Street in Hickory.

Dr. Patel earned his undergraduate degree in Health Systems Management from Loyola University in Chicago and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis.

Gastroenterology Associates Endoscopy Center has been named one of the 12 Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) for colonoscopy and endoscopy in North Carolina by U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice.

The Endoscopy Center in Hickory earned an overall high performing rating with a maximum three out of three score, ranking it in the top 12 Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers out of 84 in the state evaluated for colonoscopy and endoscopy.

U.S. News awards the designation of “Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers” only to the highest-rated surgical centers that satisfy U.S. News' statistical assessment of performance. Fewer than 15% of evaluated facilities earned a high performing rating.

“We are extremely proud of our entire team for their work in achieving this national recognition,” said Dr. Caroll Koscheski of Gastroenterology Associates. “We are dedicated to our mission of providing excellent care of the highest standards and quality to all our patients. We are truly honored to receive this prestigious distinction.”

Rating details included: number of procedures performed, length of stay, complications, unplanned ER visits, patient outcomes, and unplanned hospital admissions.

Ambulatory surgery centers were evaluated using three years of Medicare data with ratings based entirely on objective, risk-adjusted measures related to patient outcomes.

Nearly 5,000 ambulatory surgery centers were rated in four specialty areas: colonoscopy and endoscopy; orthopedics and spine; ophthalmology; and urology.

The study evaluated 2,029 ambulatory surgery centers performing colonoscopies and endoscopies. U.S. News recognized 249 nationwide for high performance.

The rankings of ambulatory surgery centers, also known as outpatient surgery centers and same-day surgery centers, were based on a number of factors, including patient safety, patient satisfaction, and clinical outcomes. The rankings are updated annually and are a valuable resource for patients.

We are pleased to announce the addition of Behnam Laderian, MD, to our practice. Dr. Laderian joined Gastroenterology Associates on September 5, 2023.

Dr. Laderian earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Following an internship and residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, he went on to complete fellowship training at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans.

Screening Colonoscopy Could Save Your Life.

The newest guidelines from the American Cancer Society recommend people at average risk of colorectal cancer start regular screening at age 45. Previous screening guidelines started at age 50. Studies show rates of colorectal cancer among people younger than 50 are on the rise, according to the American Cancer Society.

The recommendation to lower the age to 45 to begin colorectal cancer screening has also been endorsed by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF), as well as the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Gastroenterological Association.

High-risk individuals, such as those with a family history of colon cancer and other conditions, should begin screening earlier at age 40, or 10 years earlier than when the affected family member was diagnosed.

Early detection is essential when treatment can be very effective. Both men and women are affected equally. Even people who lead a healthy lifestyle can still develop polyps and cancer.

Colorectal cancer is often called the silent killer since advanced disease is often present once symptoms occur. Prevention is key.

Colorectal cancer is largely preventable through regular screening with colonoscopy. A colonoscopy screening exam is safe, cost-effective, and typically well-tolerated.

Colonoscopy is the gold standard in colorectal cancer screening. It is the preferred colorectal cancer screening test because it is the only test that both finds and removes precancerous polyps during the same exam. This potentially prevents cancer from ever occurring.

Popular stool-based tests are poor at detecting colon polyps and do not offer the same degree of protection. Stool tests are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for high-risk patients.

Most colorectal cancers arise from precancerous growths in the colon called polyps which can be found during a screening exam and removed before they turn into cancer.

It is critical that the screening exam is of the highest quality, or else cancers, known as “interval cancers,” can, unfortunately, occur before the next recommended exam. The best protection is provided by gastroenterologists who are skilled at finding precancerous adenomas, measured by the Adenoma Detection Rate.

A person at average risk with normal colonoscopy results will not need another exam for 10 years. Should a polyp or cancer be found, follow-up intervals may be more frequent.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in North Carolina. Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 23 for men and 1 in 26 for women, according to the American Cancer Society.

Each year, more than 140,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the U.S. and over 50,000 people die from it.

In our area, colon cancer has decreased by more than 30% over a ten-year time span, according to Dr. Caroll Koscheski with Gastroenterology Associates. Much of this progress can be attributed to more people getting screening colonoscopy exams and increased screening efforts.

How to Lower Your Risk of Colorectal Cancer

Get regular colorectal cancer screenings beginning at age 45. If you have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps or a personal history of another cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, talk to your healthcare provider about earlier screening. Be sure your exam is performed by a gastroenterologist with a proven record of a high Adenoma Detection Rate.

Eat a healthy low-fat diet rich in antioxidants.

If you use tobacco, quit. Tobacco use increases your risk of colorectal cancer. If you don’t use tobacco, don’t start.

Exercise for at least 30 minutes three to four days each week. Even moderate exercise such as walking, gardening, or climbing steps may help reduce your risk.

Reduce weight. Obesity is now a well-established risk factor for colon cancer and many other chronic diseases.

We are pleased to announce the addition of Bradley Zins, MD to our practice. Dr. Zins joined Gastroenterology Associates on May 2, 2022.

He brings more than 25 years of experience to the practice as gastroenterologist at the Billings Clinic, the largest multi-specialty physician group in Montana.

Highly skilled at performing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a specialized technique that combines endoscopy and X-rays to diagnose and treat problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas, Dr. Zins brings this much needed service to our community.

Specific clinical interests of Dr. Zins include therapeutic endoscopy, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and hepatobiliary disease.

Dr. Zins earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. He completed his residency and fellowship at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, Minnesota.

Gastroenterology Associates endoscopy unit was recently recognized for outstanding quality measures by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

ASGE honors endoscopy units that meet rigorous criteria set forth in its Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program (EURP).

As the only national program of its kind, it honors endoscopy units that demonstrate a commitment to delivering quality and safety as reflected in their unit policies, credentialing, staff training and competency assessment, and quality improvement activities. This also includes meeting infection control guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“At Gastroenterology Associates, patient safety comes first with each patient and with every procedure,” said Kristin Brown, BSN, RN, Director of Endoscopic Services. “Our team of physicians and staff are dedicated to setting the standard for safe, quality patient care, and we have worked hard to develop best practices to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.”

Hickory Daily Record – September 12, 2021 – Gastroenterology Associates of Hickory marks a major milestone celebrating 25 years in private practice serving western North Carolina as board-certified specialists in gastrointestinal and liver disease.

Founded in 1996 by Dr. Caroll Koscheski and Dr. John Meier, the practice began with only two doctors and three employees. Gastroenterology Associates now lists thirteen providers, including seven physicians plus six advanced practice providers. More than seventy-five full-time and part-time employees complete the staff.

In addition to Doctors Koscheski and Meier, gastroenterologists at the practice also include Doctors Simon Allport, Gaa Richardson, Susan Nikrooz, Kristen Mussari and Disha Shah.

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new physician to our medical staff. Dr. Kristen Mussari joined Gastroenterology Associates on August 1, 2019.

Dr. Mussari is a native of Pennsylvania where she completed her medical training. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She received her medical degree from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton.

After completing an internship and residency at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Dr. Mussari went on to complete a fellowship in gastroenterology at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Mussari is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association.

Gastroenterology Associates Endoscopy Facility Celebrates 10 Years

Ten years ago, Gastroenterology Associates opened the first in-office endoscopy facility in the greater Hickory Metro area to enthusiastic reviews from patients. Today, the majority of the endoscopy procedures for the practice are performed in our award-winning facility.

Demand for in-office colon cancer exams has dramatically increased with the aging baby boomer population. Colonoscopies, the preferred colorectal cancer screening test, are the primary endoscopic procedures performed at the Gastroenterology Associates endoscopy unit.

“In 2005, we saw the need for an office-based facility since hospital same-day surgeries were overwhelmed with demand for colonoscopies. We developed our facility to provide a lower-cost option without compromising quality, safety or patient satisfaction,” explained Dr. John Meier.

“Office-based endoscopy procedures are far less expensive than the same procedures at hospitals,” said Dr. Meier. “Patients also like the privacy of our facility, and our caring staff creates a comfortable atmosphere for each and every patient.”

The 3,500 square foot endoscopy unit features three procedure rooms with high definition equipment. Six preparation rooms and six recovery rooms provide patients and their families a pleasant environment to meet with the physician before and after their exam.

The endoscopy facility has been recognized for outstanding quality measures by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and is the only endoscopy facility in the Unifour area to receive the ASGE Certificate of Recognition. In addition, the endoscopy unit was one of the first four centers in North Carolina to be recognized by ASGE.

Accredited, as well, by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc., (AAAHC), the endoscopy facility at Gastroenterology Associates has met nationally-recognized standards for the provision of quality health care set by AAAHC. Accreditation distinguishes the endoscopy facility from other outpatient facilities by providing the highest quality of care to its patients as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation. The endoscopy facility is also licensed by Medicare and the State of North Carolina.

Great success! Second Annual 5K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness

More than 750 runners and walkers participated in the second annual “Get Your Rear in Gear – Hickory 5K Run/Walk” with a large crowd of family, friends, volunteers, survivors and spectators on hand March 22, 2014 at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

“Get Your Rear in Gear – Hickory was a strong victory for colon cancer awareness. We appreciate the outstanding community-wide support from businesses and individuals who partnered with us to make this event a great success,” said Dr. Gregory Diamonti of Gastroenterology Associates and local event chair.

Gastroenterology Associates, P.A. was one of the presenting sponsors for the event.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. This event is designed to promote it, raise funds for colon cancer screening, honor survivors and support care givers.

Funds raised at Get Your Rear in Gear – Hickory stay in the community to be invested in local projects to increase colon cancer awareness and education, screening and prevention programs, and offer support services to those affected by the disease.

Get Your Rear in Gear® events are produced by the Colon Cancer Coalition, a non-profit organization based in Minneapolis.
